BEHIND THE SOCIAL SCENES: Social Media vs. Real Life

SIGH. This feels weird! I have been wanting to start a blog for about 7 years. But until now, something has always held me back. I never wanted to be ‘that girl’ who thinks she can blog about her life and expect people to actually care. Because in reality, who wants to watch or read a glorified version of someone’s life that is REALLY REALLY annoyingly perfect…but actually incredibly fake and contrived? It’s so tempting (for everyone, not just a blogger or influencer) to create this ideal version of life to present to people as the truth. But it’s not the truth—or maybe sometimes it is, but it’s a skewed version of the truth or not the WHOLE truth.

And yes, while I’m saying all of this, I’ll be the first to admit that I am THE WORST when it comes to social media (just ask my husband, Tim). I spend way too much time thinking about the perfect Instagram post and I will 100% ruin a moment to take a shameless selfie that will last all of 24 hours. The interesting twist in my social media story, however, is that after college, it became my career in which I now have almost a decade of experience. As a fairly creative person suffering from severe FOMO, working in social media turned out to be the perfect fit and allowed me to forge my own path in an area that had not even existed when I was in high school.

Where am I going with all of this? Basically what I’m trying to say is that I have literally made a living off of creating an online social media presence for various brands, so I know first hand what all goes into it and how there’s sooo much below the surface that no one sees (similar to my own social media presence…i.e. see above how I cut my dog’s peepee out of one of my ‘maternity photos’–that I took myself with my camera on a timer–and was running back and forth jumping on the bed to get the shot. HAHA). I have decided that with this blog, I will attempt to show the behind the social scenes and will reveal the WHOLE truth. There will still be plenty of pretty pictures and perfect moments, mind you, but I promise to also expose the pig beneath the lipstick and we can all share a little laugh about how ridiculous—albeit wonderful—life really is.

I have a good friend who always tells me the true story of what happens when her three daughters get together. It is such a relief to hear the real story. Thanks for doing this…. I’ll be back.

Love this idea! When I teach my childbirth classes I try to give the couples an idea of what to expect with how life will change: amazing ups with just as much downs! I think with social media we make believe that there are only ups and when couples are faced with downs they feel like they can’t handle it or they are the only ones…enter depression. I look forward to reading your blogs!

So good!! Maybe you could do a guest post sometime about your childbirth class – it’s so great that you are taking the time to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly! I’ll be in touch 🙂

This is so fantastic, Jules! We could all use a little dose of real life to make us all feel like our little world of crazy is not so crazy after all! Can’t wait to follow Jules in Real Life!
